Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942.

Talk | Tuscans: Some Intriguing Questions About This Singular Ornamental Type (online)

Tuscan letterforms can be subtle or extravagant, sumptuous or delicate, but in an inexplicable way this very singular genre populates streets and typographic catalogs of all times. A product of decorative ingenuity, Tuscan vernaculars dress the street signs of Mexico as much as the stained glass windows of Paris, the "porteno" filleting of Buenos Aires signs or the hulls of fishing boats in the waters of the Amazon. But where do Tuscan letters come from? Are they just another expressive addition to the decorative sections in type founders and printers' catalogs? Is it possible that they were born from a mischievous interpretation of Roman inscriptions engraved in stone? These and other questions will be raised -- not necessarily answered -- as part of this talk by typeface expert Alejandro Lo Celso

Discussion | Getting Past “Yes:” Disentangling the Relationship Between Housing Supply and Affordability (online)

The Adams Administration is trying to change the city's zoning rules in an ostensible effort to address the city's affordable housing crisis. Its proposal, "City of Yes for Housing Opportunity," currently under public review, constitutes a far-ranging upzoning aimed at stimulating the construction of market rate housing. Critics of the plan point out that post-upzoning development tends to increase housing costs. The City, however, insists that academic research concludes the opposite and that the example of cities like Austin and Minneapolis support the fundamental logic of the City of Yes approach. This panel, hosted by Village Preservation Special Projects Director Juan Rivero and consisting of planning and housing scholars with expertise in the residential markets of Austin, Minneapolis, and New York City, will consider the City's contention, in view of empirical evidence about the relation between market rate housing supply and housing costs.

Discussion | Peace of Art: A Dynamic Hip-Hop Event

This event unites emerging creatives from Berlin, NYC, and Paris, providing a unique platform for 40 young artists that aims to foster cultural, artistic and political exchange. Hip-hop culture forms the heartbeat of this connection—a shared space where they exchange ideas, gain fresh perspectives, and reflect on their lives in new ways. As ambassadors for their respective cities, the participants will build a network over the span of two years, consisting of digital meetups as well as in person trips to each city – starting with 10 Days in New York in phase one and 10 Days in Berlin and Paris in phase two. Apart from addressing current social and political issues that they care about, they will also work on artistically processing their ideas and thoughts together, bringing those on a stage to a large audience through music, photography, poetry and more. Politicians from the three different cities will act as patrons of the project, giving the participants an insight to political processes and the opportunity to communicate their viewpoints to decision makers directly.
